My Rationale: The main focus of this activitiy is to provide my high school students with a overall idea of Stereotypes and Cultural Awareness in the U.S. With the tremendous influx of diversity in our classrooms, all students should be fully aware of all the negative stereotypes that are classified with each ethnic group. Boondocks is a cartoon show that comes on Cartoon Network during the night hours of 11pm aka. Adult Swim. The creator of this cartoon and show, Aaron Mcgruder has taken the newspapers and television by storm with this comical story of the stereotypes and biases of the world through a black males eyes. This is an extremely popular show amongst all teens today, so this would be a great way to grab the students attention and also make a point towards educating them on this topic. This short clip shows some of the stereotypes that are classified with the black male in today’s society.
Assignment: I would break the class into four different groups in order to have equal students assigned for the 4 questions assigned for debate.
1.) What stereotypes are viewed in this video clip?
2.) Does the media play a significant role in accepting these stereotypes or dismissing them? Why or why not?
3.) Who is usually stereotyped in today’s society? Is there any biased stereotypes about people?
4.) Are stereotypes needed in today’s society and why or why not does most of society accept them?
Activity: Groups will be designated one of the four questions in order to debate the status on each question. Other groups will be able to provide their own feedback on how they feel about the question or answers made by each group. I would be the facilitator or judge to make sure each group gets the point across in a right and respectful manner. Each student will get 10 min. to argue their points. This will take up the entire class time, so it will be an entire class assignment.
Upon viewing this footage, I got the inside track on what these students at Mabry Middle School are actually accomplishing only a daily basis. It is simply AMAZING, watching what these 7th and 8th graders are able to do with the simple usage of the Mac computers they have at their school.
They have taken the simplicity of using the student voice and have exposed it to masses just by using the internet. I have heard about this school in GA, prior to taking this class, but I did not know that they were this famous for their production material. I mean, having an awards show with massive publicity is HUGE as a middle school student. I would have been nothing but the least bit overwhelmed, which is why I greatly commend and applause these students efforts.
The students touched on a variety of different subjects which included the negative effects of fast food and media, racism among the U.S. and world, and globalizing technology among all classrooms. Tim Tyson has signified had crucial technology usage is in the classroom so that students can let their creative imagination run wild with their ideas. This school has been recognized nation wide for their achievements, so hopefully more GA. schools will follow suit in encompasses more technological advances in the classrooms. This is why I am glad that I am taking this course, so I will not fall behind when this incredible trend goes running rapid.
